United Nations Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nowais has arrived in Zimbabwe ahead of two major international conferences focused on sustainable tourism and women's empowerment.

Zimbabwe is hosting the 23rd United Nations Tourism Committee on Tourism and Sustainability from April 27 to 28, followed by the 2nd United Nations Tourism Regional Congress on Women Empowerment in Tourism in Africa from April 29 to May 1.

During her visit, Al Nowais met President Emmerson Mnangagwa, with discussions centred on advancing sustainable tourism development and strengthening cooperation between Zimbabwe and global tourism stakeholders.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the engagement highlighted Zimbabwe's ambition to position itself as a leading global tourism destination.

"The engagement focused on strengthening strategic cooperation, promoting sustainable tourism, and leveraging the sector as a driver of economic growth, investment and job creation," the ministry said in a statement.

Discussions also explored ways to increase tourist arrivals while ensuring that tourism development remains inclusive and environmentally sustainable.

The ministry emphasised that Zimbabwe is committed to building international partnerships that support national development goals and broaden economic opportunities through tourism.

"The country continues to open its doors to the world, embracing partnerships that showcase its unique beauty while delivering tangible benefits to its people," the statement added.

The conferences are expected to bring together policymakers, industry leaders and development partners, positioning Zimbabwe at the centre of regional and global conversations on sustainable and inclusive tourism growth.
