Build One South Africa (BOSA) leader Mmusi Maimane has written to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa seeking clarification over a video allegedly showing him in an informal interaction with Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo.
The matter follows Ramaphosa's recent visit to President Emmerson Mnangagwa at Precabe Farm in Kwekwe, where Chivayo was also seen interacting with the South African leader.
In a letter dated May 22, Maimane said the footage had sparked public debate and raised questions about Ramaphosa's earlier statements regarding his relationship with Chivayo.
"A video has recently been circulated in the public domain appearing to show you in a private, informal engagement with Mr Wicknell Chivayo," Maimane wrote.
He said the apparent interaction created inconsistencies that required clear explanation to the public, particularly given previous statements suggesting the President had no prior knowledge of Chivayo.
BOSA said the footage had been widely interpreted as raising concerns about the use of proximity to the presidency in relation to Chivayo's reported business and legal matters.
"These perceptions have the potential to erode confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the presidency," the party said.
The opposition party added that clarity was necessary due to the seriousness of the implications for public trust in government institutions.
BOSA has requested details on the nature of the interaction, whether it was official or private, when it took place, and whether any formal records or declarations exist regarding the engagement.
The party also sought clarification on how the interaction aligns with previous public statements issued by the Presidency concerning Chivayo.
