Is Southern Africa a hub for organised crime?

Published: 8 hours ago
A new report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime has ranked Southern Africa as one of the world's most significant hubs for illicit trade.

The study highlights the region's central role in trafficking networks, from heroin smuggling routes that pass through Mozambique and Tanzania, to gold and diamond smuggling across Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Zambia. Johannesburg was identified as the most important crime hub, connecting local markets to global buyers.

The report also found that human trafficking and wildlife crimes - including ivory and rhino horn smuggling - remain widespread.

Analysts blame weak governance, corruption, and porous borders. "Organised crime thrives where the rule of law is weak. In Southern Africa, criminal syndicates often outpace the capacity of governments to respond," the report noted.

Security experts warn that the rise of organised crime could undermine regional stability and erode investor confidence. Calls are growing for a coordinated regional response, including intelligence sharing and stronger anti-corruption measures.
