Zupco return to viability on course
Published: 16 October 2013
State-owned bus operator, the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) says it has achieved targets for its 3-year strategic plan as part of an ongoing recapitalisation drive.

ZUPCO is on a recapitalisation exercise and has added 50 new buses bringing its total fleet to 300 buses.

The move is in line with its 2011 to 2013, three year strategic plan where it aimed to increase services to the routes that it operates.

The company's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Brian Chawasarira told reporters that the bus operator is diversifying into provision of semi-luxury transport services for improved inter-city travel.

The state-owned transport operator is gradually returning to viability after years of harsh operating conditions.

The company has recalled over 400 former workers to operate its new fleet of buses.

At its peak, ZUPCO had more than 400 buses.

The company's revival is critical to the success of government's national transport policy which seeks to re-introduce the mass bus transport system.
