POSTAL services provider, Zimpost intends to start an insurance business this year, an official said.

Currently, Zimpost is an agent of insurance companies such as NicozDiamond and Champions Insurance but was planning to "go full time" as a way of diversifying revenue streams.

Speaking on the sidelines of the second Zimpost Unpack a Box Christmas Promotion draw in Highfield, Harare, last Saturday, the company's managing director Dr Douglas Zimbango said they were considering to sell craft and insurance services.

"We are hoping to go full time in the insurance industry," he said.

"Zimpost wants to go beyond being an agent of insurance products," he said.

However, he could not divulge further details saying they were still some confidential outstanding issues.

The company would also need to get the approval from the shareholders. Zimpost is owned by the Government,  said Dr Zimbango.

Earlier at the function, Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Webster Shamu, who was the guest of honour at the function urged state enterprises to be innovative.

"I implore all parastatals to be innovative like Zimpost as its growth opportunities lie in other services more than just letters," said Minister Shamu.
