Zim National Tourism Strategy takes shape
Published: 20 June 2018
The strategic plan for the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, along with its integrated performance agreement and departmental integrated performance agreements have been given until Monday next week to be finalised and submitted to the Office of the President and Cabinet, paving way for the finalisation of the National  Tourism Sector Strategy.

The target is for the tourism sector to finalise a strategic plan that will be aligned to the National Tourism Sector Strategy and the National Tourism Master Plan.

This would ultimately grow the tourism sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) to above $6 billion from the current levels of around $2,5 billion.

Essentially, the National Tourism Strategy will have a lifespan of 12 years until 2030 by which time the industry projects strong growth in arrivals from the current 2.1 million to at least 5 million.

This will be achieved through strong focus on key areas outlined by the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Prisca Mupfumira during a stakeholders meeting held in Harare today.

Also key for the strategic plan is to identify factors that will drive investment opportunities for local businesses to expand and avail equal opportunities for those with limited capacity to have a fair and equal opportunity for investment.

The sector recently witnessed the sealing of a $1.2 billion investment deal between the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry and a Chinese firm, Touchroad International, which will be utilised towards the establishment of infrastructure in key resorts.

The strategic plan workshop for industry players will thus have a bearing towards the National Tourism Sector Strategy which is undergoing final changes before being made policy.
