Small-scale miners mainstay of gold production

Small-scale gold miners have been described as the mainstay of gold production in Zimbabwe and should be protected if the country's economy is to fully recover.

The contribution of small-scale miners commonly known as Makorokoza has been largely underestimated.

Statistics from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) show that small-scale miners now account for more 50 percent of annual production hence the need to totally decriminalise their activities and further capacitate them.

Aspiring Member of Parliament for Chegutu West Dexter Nduna who has become the face for fighting for the rights of small-scale miners in Mashonaland West Province vowed to continue with such works if elected into parliament.

"This province is the heart of gold mining in this country and I will continue to make sure that your work is recognised. You produce more than 50 percent of the country's gold so why should government criminalise you," he said.

Mr Nduna was speaking at Telford Business Center 34 kilometers from Chegutu during a campaign rally to drum up support for his candidature for the upcoming harmonised elections to be held on Monday next week.

Mining has been cited as one of the sectors key to propelling Zimbabwe into a middle-income economy come 2030 with an estimated $11 billion in export earnings over the next 12 years.
