Air Zimbabwe passengers hit by disruptions

Air Zimbabwe passengers face travel disruptions after the airline's only plane in service was sent for repairs.

Air Zimbabwe said its Boeing 767-200ER was undergoing a mandatory maintenance check from June 6-19.

"Management is working on alternative equipment arrangements in order to ensure normal service is resumed as from Tuesday, June 11," Air Zimbabwe said in a statement on Friday.

The flag carrier said passengers already booked would be contacted and put on other airlines.

"Once the maintenance requirement is accomplished, the aircraft will be released back into service," the statement added.

Air Zimbabwe recently took delivery of an Embraer ERJ145 which is expected to ease pressure on the Boeing 767.

An Air Zimbabwe spokesman told ZimLive that the plane's registration was completed last Friday.

"We are waiting to complete a few line items then we fly," the spokesman said, providing no time-frame of when the Embraer would join service.

Air Zimbabwe flies daily between Harare and Johannesburg and Harare and Bulawayo via Victoria Falls.

The airline's troubles have been a boon for rivals like FastJet and South African Airways, who now move the bulk of passengers between those destinations.
