Eureka Gold Mine targets re-opening by April 2021

Published: 02 October 2019
Gold production at Eureka Mine in Guruve is expected to resume within the next 18 months with refurbishment and rehabilitation work progressing well.

At its peak , Eureka Gold Mine was the country's proud gold source, before operations were suspended due to economic challenges.

Thanks to an investment package, the mine is now working on restoring operations within the next 18 months.

The gold producing company is currently undertaking multiple work programmes to restore viability, as much of the equipment had become obsolete due to inactivity running for over a decade.

A government delegation comprising of the Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Honourable Winston Chitando, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa and the Minister of Energy and Power Development Advocate Fortune Chasi among other officials, toured the gold mine this Wednesday.

The delegation was appraised on the progress made to date in reopening the mine, 10 months after the ground breaking ceremony officiated by His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Authorities are confident that they are on schedule to resume production within the next 18 months.

"We are confident that we will be able to reopen by April 2021. Our progress has been slow but steady and we are sure reopening should be within the targeted 18 months," said the Chief Executive Officer Michael Fowler.

The open pit continues to be dewatered, after which grade control drilling will be undertaken.

Refurbishment activity is also being conducted on ore crushing equipment and floatation plants.

Government hopes that the restoration of operations at the mine will strengthen its 100 tonne gold production target.

"As  government, we are satisfied with progress at Eureka Gold Mine as they work towards reopening. indeed, Eureka is an important gold producer that will contribute to the 100 tonne target. We are looking at the mine contributing at least two tonnes of gold per month," said Honourable Chitando.

With power challenges being a major issue, government has since made a commitment to guarantee steady power supply.
