Air Zimbabwe rebuilds its booking engine

Air Zimbabwe rebuilds its booking engine

There is growing evidence that Air Zimbabwe's long-awaited return to the London route is progressing behind the scenes, with the airline recently activating a new reservations and online booking platform just weeks before the scheduled relaunch of flights on July 1.

The development marks one of the most tangible signs yet that preparations for the route are advancing, as the national carrier seeks to re-establish itself on one of its most prestigious international services after years of absence.

According to a disclosure by Turkish aviation technology company Hitit Bilgisayar, Air Zimbabwe successfully went live on June 8 with several key components of the company's Crane software suite, including Crane PAX for passenger reservations, Crane IBE (Internet Booking Engine) and Crane RA for revenue accounting.

The systems form the backbone of an airline's commercial operations, handling reservations, ticket sales, online bookings and revenue management.

The upgrade builds on Air Zimbabwe's existing relationship with Hitit, which dates back to a 2021 agreement under which the airline adopted the company's departure control system.

Industry observers say the implementation of a modern reservations platform is a significant operational milestone and suggests that the airline is strengthening the infrastructure needed to support international operations ahead of the London relaunch.

However, while substantial technical progress appears to be taking place behind the scenes, questions remain about the airline's communication strategy.

The announcement of the London route itself first emerged through a statement issued by Spanish carrier Plus Ultra, while news of the reservations system upgrade surfaced through a filing made by Hitit to Turkish stock market authorities.

Despite the growing public interest in the route, Air Zimbabwe has yet to make a comprehensive public announcement outlining flight schedules, frequencies, fares or booking procedures.

The absence of official communication has generated frustration among prospective travellers eager to secure seats on the revived service.

Interest in the airline has surged in recent days following reports of the London relaunch. Search activity related to Air Zimbabwe and online bookings reportedly increased sharply as travellers sought information about the route.

At the same time, some users attempting to access the airline's website encountered a maintenance notice as the new systems were being integrated.

The timing created an unusual situation in which interest in the airline was peaking while its primary online platform was temporarily unavailable due to the very upgrades designed to support future bookings.

The airline's digital presence has also come under scrutiny. While Air Zimbabwe currently operates through its airzimbabwe.aero website, the more familiar airzimbabwe.com domain is no longer under the airline's control.

Industry analysts note that domain ownership plays an increasingly important role in customer acquisition and online trust, particularly for airlines competing in international markets where passengers often make purchasing decisions online.

The relaunch comes in a highly competitive market. The Harare-London corridor is currently served indirectly by major international carriers offering one-stop connections through hubs such as Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Kigali and Abu Dhabi.

These airlines have spent years building customer loyalty among Zimbabwean travellers through established schedules and extensive route networks.

Air Zimbabwe's principal advantage lies in the convenience of a direct service, which significantly reduces travel time compared to one-stop alternatives.

A successful relaunch could therefore provide travellers with greater choice while increasing competition on the route, potentially leading to improved fares and service offerings across the market.

Industry observers say the technical groundwork for the route now appears to be largely in place. The challenge facing the airline may be ensuring that potential customers are informed about the service and can easily access booking information ahead of the inaugural flight.

With less than a month remaining before the planned launch, attention is increasingly turning to how Air Zimbabwe will market the route, communicate with passengers and position itself against well-established competitors.

While the airline's operational preparations appear to be gathering momentum, many prospective travellers are still waiting for the one thing only Air Zimbabwe can provide: clear information on when flights will operate, how much they will cost and how passengers can book a seat.
