Socialite in court over witchcraft claims

Popular social media personality Melody Natalie Mhandu, known as Enchantress, appeared before a Mbare magistrate on Thursday facing allegations of casting a spell on her former friend Tatenda Butau.

The 34-year-old was charged under section 98(i) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9.23, which criminalizes practices commonly associated with witchcraft. After a brief court appearance, Mhandu was released unconditionally.

According to state allegations, on August 4 at Churu Farm, Mhandu, with the assistance of a traditional healer named Christine Matashu (also known as Manjenjenje), allegedly wrote Butau's name and others on a red cloth, wrapped it around a knife, sprinkled snuff powder, and buried it under a muhacha tree in an attempt to cast a harmful spell.

The prosecution's case was partly supported by testimony from Mhandu's former helper, Elizabeth Mharirire, who stated that Mhandu asked her to accompany her to the ritual with the traditional healer. Mharirire reported finding snuff powder mysteriously placed in her personal spaces, which led to a fallout and her resignation. She later informed Butau and accompanied her to retrieve the buried items, prompting the police report.

Mhandu has firmly denied all allegations through her legal team. Her lawyer argued that she was not present at Churu Farm on the alleged date, did not perform any ritualistic acts, nor had any knowledge or contact with the named traditional healer. He described the charges as a "malicious fabrication" by a disgruntled former maid who is retaliating after being dismissed.

The defence also contended that the accusations are vague and appear to be aimed at public embarrassment, noting that Butau's report came shortly after Mhandu had lodged a counter-complaint at Highlands Police Station.

Mhandu's lawyer urged the court to acquit her client of all charges, emphasizing that the claims do not meet the legal definition of witchcraft and are intended to damage her reputation.

The case is set to proceed as investigations continue.
