Zimbabwe lecturers consider strike over salaries

Published: 6 hours ago
Lecturers at Zimbabwe's state universities are threatening to go on strike following the collapse of wage negotiations with government.

The Zimbabwe State Universities Union of Academics (Zisuua) and the Zimbabwe Universities and Allied Workers Union (Zuawu) announced that they will conduct a strike ballot on September 5 to determine the way forward.

Union leaders accuse government of failing to address salary erosion caused by inflation. They argue that most lecturers earn far below the poverty datum line, making it impossible to meet basic needs.

"If government does not act, higher education will grind to a halt. Students will suffer, and the quality of learning will collapse," said Zisuua president Dr Tatenda Nyagura.

Government has promised to review wages but insists the economy cannot sustain "unsustainable increments."

Students have expressed concern that another strike could disrupt the academic calendar, which has already been affected by previous industrial actions.
