The Zimbabwean Government is finalising arrangements for the upcoming Grade Seven, Form Four, and Upper Sixth examinations, set to begin next month, as schools reopened last week for the final term of the 2025 academic year. Thousands of learners are expected to sit the examinations.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education confirmed a smooth start to the third term, with no reports of schools demanding payment of fees exclusively in foreign currency, a concern that had previously forced parents to seek US dollars on the black market.

"Since the opening of schools last week, Government has not received complaints from parents regarding exclusive foreign currency fees. Schools are accepting both foreign and local currency, and so far, the term has started smoothly," said Ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro.

Mr Ndoro also assured that preparations for public examinations are on track, with expectations of improved pass rates this year.

Meanwhile, the Government is pressing ahead with an ambitious school-building programme aimed at addressing infrastructure gaps and expanding access to education. Since 2022, over 600 new schools have been constructed nationwide, with a target of at least 200 more schools by the end of 2025.

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Torerai Moyo highlighted the multi-stakeholder approach underpinning the success of the programme, involving government, development partners, private organisations, churches, and individuals.

"I wish to inform this House that one organisation, the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints, has built seven schools this year. The Church of Johane Marange is constructing over eight schools, and the Government has received funding from NBS for 25 schools," Minister Moyo said.

He also confirmed international support, including a US$20 million pledge from the OPEC Fund for International Development and partnerships with countries such as Algeria.

Minister Moyo expressed confidence that the 2025 target of constructing 200 schools would be achieved, stressing that the initiative is crucial to reducing classroom overcrowding, shortening travel distances for learners in rural areas, and improving overall education quality.
