Cimas Health Group has unveiled the Cimas @80 Media Awards, a new initiative offering US$9,000 in prize money to encourage in-depth, fact-based reporting on Zimbabwe's health sector.

Launched in Harare on Friday, the awards mark the company's 80th anniversary and seek to "inspire healthier communities" by rewarding journalism that moves beyond headlines to unpack the realities of healthcare delivery.

Four categories will be contested - healthcare transformation, health and wellness, medical innovation, and public health awareness. Each category winner will receive US$1,500, while runners-up will walk away with US$750.

Cimas Chief Executive Officer Vulindlela Ndlovu urged journalists to push boundaries in their storytelling.
"Sometimes I wish the conversations were deeper," he said. "Let's understand the impact of the story on healthcare - on investment, on communities, and on the path we've walked. We want as many stories out there. Sometimes, the prize is simply having been in the race."

The awards ceremony will take place in Bulawayo on November 20, with adjudication by a panel comprising veteran journalists, medical experts, and representatives from the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ). Submissions close on October 31.

Cimas, a long-time gold sponsor of the National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA), said this new initiative goes beyond sponsorship. The group wants to drive depth and impact in reporting, underscoring its belief that journalism can influence policy, shift narratives, and change lives.
