The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has appealed to the public for information leading to the arrest of opposition activist Godfrey Karembera, popularly known as Madzibaba Veshanduko.
In a statement released over the weekend, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Karembera (47) and his associate, Kudzai Weston Saruwaka, escaped during a high-speed chase with police officers. The pair is accused of illegally distributing political fliers in Machipisa, Glen View, and Budiriro.
According to police, the fliers were intended to incite public participation in unsanctioned protests that were planned for October 17 against President Emmerson Mnangagwa's government. Authorities allege that the protests were orchestrated by fugitive war veteran Blessed Geza.
"Police are appealing for information leading to the arrest of Godfrey Karembera (47), popularly known as Madzibaba Eshanduko, and Kudzai Weston Saruwaka, who fled from officers during a high-speed chase while allegedly distributing fliers in Machipisa, Glen View, and Budiriro. The two face charges under the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23," Nyathi said.
Karembera, a well-known supporter of Nelson Chamisa, the former leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), is no stranger to controversy. In April this year, his home in Guruve was petrol-bombed by unidentified assailants. Although Karembera was not present at the time, his 17-year-old son, Laxmore, sustained injuries while rescuing his younger siblings as the fire destroyed the family's property.
In 2022, Karembera was arrested in Harare after allegedly insulting police officers and referring to them as dogs. He also drew police attention for wearing yellow clothing, which symbolized allegiance to the CCC party.
The ZRP has urged anyone with information about Karembera's whereabouts to report to the nearest police station as investigations into the matter continue.
