Chevrons on the brink of World Cup Qualification

Chevrons on the brink of World Cup Qualification
Published: 4 hours ago
The hopes of a nation rest on the Zimbabwe cricket team this afternoon as they battle Kenya in a do-or-die semi-final at Harare Sports Club in the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier Africa.

Victory will secure Zimbabwe a coveted place at the 2026 T20I World Cup, to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

For the Chevrons, this is more than just a match - it is about redemption. Having painfully missed the last T20 World Cup after losses to Namibia and Uganda in the previous qualifiers, Zimbabwe have responded with a flawless campaign so far, topping Group B with three wins from three against Uganda, Botswana and Tanzania.

Central to this success has been the scintillating form of 21-year-old Brian Bennett, who has lit up the tournament with a century and two half-centuries. His explosive 111 off 60 balls against Tanzania not only sealed Zimbabwe's semi-final place but also etched his name in the record books. Bennett became the youngest player in the world to score centuries in all three international formats, joining Sikandar Raza and Brendan Taylor as the only Zimbabweans to achieve the feat.

Reflecting on his performances, Bennett downplayed personal accolades, insisting the focus remained on team success. "It's not much about my performance. It's more about getting Zimbabwe over the line," he said. "If we just stick to our basics and plans, I'm sure we'll come out with another victory."

Zimbabwe's campaign has been a collective effort. Veteran Brendan Taylor, back from a 3.5-year ICC ban, scored his maiden T20 century against Botswana last Sunday and is set to return to the XI after being rested for the Tanzania clash. Opening partner Tadiwanashe Marumani has provided strong support with the bat, while pacemen Brad Evans, Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava have kept opponents under pressure with the ball.

Their opponents, Kenya, enter the contest on the back of a spirited win over Nigeria that secured their semi-final spot. They will be eager to upset the hosts and book their own ticket to the global showpiece.

Earlier in the day, Namibia face Tanzania in the first semi-final at Takashinga Cricket Club, with the winner also earning automatic qualification.

For Zimbabwe, the equation is simple: one more win to return to the world stage. The home crowd is expected to rally behind their side in full voice, hoping to witness history as the Chevrons take a giant step toward the 2026 World Cup.
