Zimbabwe fixed line operator TelOne announced its plans to launch high speed broadband services in Victoria Falls tomorrow, ahead of the United Nations (UN) World Tourism Organisation General Assembly in Victoria Falls and Livingstone set for 24-29 August 2013.

Installation of a high speed fibre-optic backbone route linking Victoria Falls to the country's second-largest city Bulawayo was finished in July, and according to TelOne's CEO Mrs Chipo Mtasa the new fibre infrastructure would allow access to broadband connections via TelOne Wi-Fi hotspots across the city.

The launch follows the successful completion of a Fibre Optic Transmission Link.  

TelOne will be getting its broadband internet bandwidth from Namibia telecom through West African Cable System (WACS).

According to TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database, TelOne's 280km Harare-Mutare fibre backbone went live in March 2011, providing indirect access to the East African Submarine System (EASSy) via Beira in Mozambique.

TelOne modernized the Bulawayo to Victoria Fall transmission route by replacing the old radio with a high capacity IP microwave radio of 622Mbps in capacity.

TelOne owns a stake in EASSy through the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC), which holds 30% of the consortium cable.

In April 2012 TelOne announced the completion of another fibre cable, this time from Harare to second-largest city Bulawayo.
