The Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (ZIBAWU) has petitioned the Barclays bank to refrain from the alleged refusal to negotiate in good faith with employees on working conditions.

The bank workers representative body in solidarity with their members from Barclays bank carried a peaceful demonstration at the bank's head office in the capital where an appeal was made to the financial institution to address the alleged failure to negotiate in good faith with employees on working conditions.

ZIBAWU secretary general Peter Mutasa accused the institution of deliberately refusing to enter into negotiations with the workers' committee.

As part of the union petition, the representative body is calling for the institution to consider the proposal by workers to review salaries by at least 35 percent for non-managerial staff and to engage both the workers as well as the union on working conditions.

Meanwhile in a statement, UNI Africa, a regional organisation which represents 20 million members in 900 trade unions in the services sector worldwide acknowledged receiving complaints from ZIBAWU and called upon Barclays to ensure that the situation is addressed and that all structures of social dialogue are made functional.

Barclays bank managing director George Guvamatanga could not be reached for comment.
