Jericho Advertising scores a first

Local advertising agency, Jericho Advertising, has scored a first for Zimbabwe after chief executive Mr Denford Magora and the firm's executive director Mr Ashley Mhonda were appointed to top advertising portfolios.

Mr Magora has been appointed to the Loeries Africa Advisory Board while Mr Mhonda has just been appointed to judge the New York Festival of Advertising.

The New York Festival of Advertising is one of only two advertising awards in the world that agencies from across the world value above all others.

Jericho becomes the very first African Advertising Agency (outside of South Africa) to be represented on the New York Festival of Advertising.

Mr Mhonda, becomes not only the first Zimbabwean to ever judge at The New York Festival of Advertising, but also the first Black African ever to be appointed to judge the New York Festival of Advertising.

He will be judging on the most outstanding creative work submitted by advertising agencies from all centres of creative excellence, including the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, Singapore, China, South Africa and other.

The New York Festival of Advertising Trophy is one of the most sought after by advertising and marketing agencies from all over the world.

The only Creative Excellence Award that rivals the New York Festival is The Cannes Festival, held in France each year.

"I am truly honoured to have been recognised in this way by the New York Festivals of Advertising. It is testament to the world-class standards we strive for at Jericho that the most prestigious advertising awards in the world are noticing a little country tucked away in a little corner of Africa - Zimbabwe.

"I would especially like to thank our chief executive for believing not only in me, but in the ability of Jericho to make great work. He is the catalyst for the creative excellence we strive for every day," Mr Mhonda said

Mr Magora said that some people have now been vindicated for their belief that Mhonda and Jericho really have no peers in Zimbabwe because this is a peerless, fantastic achievement.

"Ashley is a wonderful person to work with and this really could not have happened to a better, more committed or more creative person. We are all delighted that he, and Jericho, have been recognised in this manner on the world stage of creative excellence.

The New York Festivals Senior vice president, Mr Michael Demetriades, also commented: "Honouring The World's Best Advertising requires the world's Best Judges.

"We find the most talented chief creative officers, executive creative directors, creative directors, executive producers, film directors marketing executives and designers from around the world to serve on the Grand Jury."

On his appointment to the Loeries Advisory Committee, Mr Magora said this makes him the first Zimbabwean to be appointed to sit on the advisory board of these prestigious Loeries Awards.

The Loeries, which are held in South Africa every year, are highly regarded worldwide, attracting entries from the Middle East as well.

So popular are the Loeries awards that advertising agencies from the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries known as centres of advertising excellence were also submitting their work to be judged at the Loeries. But the Loeries and South African advertising industry then deliberately took the position that work from outside Africa and the Middle East should not be eligible to enter the Loeries.

The purpose was to ensure that work from South Africa, the rest of Africa and the Middle East, is given exposure at the awards.
