Pan-African telecoms operator, Gondwana International Networks has announced that it has signed a new contract with Avanti Communications which will see the latter deploy both broadband and VOIP services to thousands of consumer and enterprise customers via Avanti's HYLAS 2 satellite, under its iWayAfrica and Africa Online brands.

The contract will extend coverage to Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, parts of Uganda, and South Africa.

Gondwana chief executive officer Mathew Welthagen said in a statement the partnership would change the market.

"We are excited to partner with Avanti to power our VOIP and broadband satellite services. Deployment of Ka-band via small dishes is an exciting
and compelling prospect for consumer data communications in Africa.

The costs savings-combined with the flexibility
and quality of the Avanti proposition will change this market completely."

Avanti Communications chief operating officer Matthew O'Connor said the marriage with Gondwana would
provide good service to the five countries.

"We are delighted to work with Gondwana in delivering services across Africa.

"The in-built flexibility of Avanti's satellite fleet will provide the high levels of service required by Gondwana's customers across five territories."

Gondwana International Networks recently acquired iWay Africa and Africa Online Mauritius from South African operator, Telkom South Africa.

United States Ambassodor to Zimbabwe Ambassador Bruce Wharton yesterday said Africa has the greatest ICT growth potential of any continent but Zimbabwe lagged behind but was
best able to lead and profit from that growth.

He said the country had a powerful combination of intellectual capital, infrastructure and language capability and could
be a global and regional player in ICT.

Gondwana International Networks which operates under its Iway Africa and Africa Online brands has a physical presence and resources in nine countries which include Zimbabwe and provides satellite and terrestrial connectivity services.

Avanti Communications is a carriers' carrier, selling wholesale data telecoms to service providers which use them to create networks for enterprise, carrier, government and consumer users.

Avanti Communications serves customers in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
