New airline seeks permit

New airline seeks permit

A NEW airline company, MJ Air Private Limited, has applied for a permit to launch operations in Zimbabwe.

The Air Services Board announced in a notice in the August 18 issue of the Government Gazette that it had received an application from the firm.

"MJ Air Private Limited has applied to the Air Services Board for the issue of an air services permit to provide scheduled and non-scheduled air services for the carriage of passengers, dry and or fresh cargo, and mail on local, regional and domestic routes," said the notice.

It becomes the second firm to apply for an air service permit this year after another airline, Zimskies Airlines, made a similar application in May.

Following the adoption of an open skies policy by the government of Zimbabwe, a number of airlines have approached the Air Services Board for permits to operate commercial flights.

Among those that have successfully entered the Zimbabwean market are budget airlines like Fastjet and Fly Africa.

Other airlines that are also queuing for permits include Fly Kumba and Rainbow Airlines.

Last year, Phoenix Air had to re-apply for the permit, four years after its first application had been rejected. Zimbabwean aviation regulators apply stringent benchmarks that have seen a number of prospective applicants failing to make the grade.

The Zimbabwean aviation sector is serviced by about a dozen airlines that include South African Airways, Kenyan Airways, Air Botswana, Ethiopian Airways, British Airways (ComAir), Air Namibia, South African Airlink, TAAG (from Angola), Emirates and Zambezi Airlines.
