Spur wants a bigger bite in Zimbabwe

Spur Corporation is set to expand its footprint in Zimbabwe with the opening of a new Doppio Zero restaurant in Harare, aiming to capture a larger share of the country's increasingly competitive dining market.

Zimbabwe is Spur's second-best-performing market in its rest-of-Africa segment by revenue, trailing only Namibia, despite having just nine outlets compared to 25 in Zambia, which ranks third. The disparity is partly attributed to price differences across markets.

Spur Corporation CEO Val Nichas revealed that the new Doppio Zero outlet will open in November at Cardinals Corner, a new commercial complex being developed by Terrace Africa in Harare. "We visualise it being a small specialty chain. I would say it probably won't go over 50/60, but you know, it depends on how the market evolves. Might expand, you never know. But I don't think it will be big," Nichas said.

The move marks Spur's first introduction of the Doppio Zero brand to Zimbabwe, signalling the company's intention to diversify its offerings beyond the existing Spur Steak Ranches.

Spur reported total restaurant sales of R11.4 billion over the past year, up 8.3%, including its international outlets. The group operates 724 restaurants across 14 countries, including Australia, Zambia, and Mauritius. While it has exited markets in the Middle East and India, Spur plans to open 42 new restaurants in South Africa and 14 internationally.

The launch of Doppio Zero in Harare comes as Zimbabwe's restaurant sector becomes increasingly competitive, with consumers seeking a wider range of dining experiences and international cuisines.
