Puma Energy Zimbabwe has commissioned its first rural solar-powered retail service station at Mhandamabwe Business Centre in Chivi, marking a significant step in expanding energy access to underserved communities.
The facility, developed in partnership with Mhuri Properties, was officially opened on Wednesday. It offers diesel, petrol, lubricants and an Express Shop outlet, with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) services expected to be introduced in the near future.
Strategically located at the intersection of the Bulawayo - Masvingo and Beitbridge - Gweru highways, the station serves as a key link between Zimbabwe and regional markets in South Africa and Mozambique, positioning it to support both local and cross-border trade.
Puma Energy Zimbabwe General Manager Patrick Ngugi said the project reflects the company's broader strategy to decentralise energy access and promote sustainable development.
"Today is a proud moment for us. It marks not just the opening of the Mhandamabwe retail station but also strengthens our commitment to energising communities and supporting sustainable development in rural Zimbabwe," he said.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Power Development Yeukai Simbanegavi highlighted the importance of infrastructure in driving rural economic growth, noting that such investments are critical in unlocking opportunities in outlying areas.
Puma Energy Head of Africa Ben Outtara said the company's footprint spans more than 16 countries, with over 700 retail sites across the continent.
"Across Africa, we operate in more than 16 countries with over 700 retail sites. However, beyond scale, what matters most is impact - expanding rural infrastructure, enabling trade and supporting industries that drive growth," he said.
Wilson Mhuri, Director of Mhuri Properties, described the project as a milestone in extending infrastructure to previously underserved areas.
"We are proud to be the first company to partner with Puma Energy in establishing a service station in a rural area. This is a landmark project in Zimbabwe and we are looking forward to expanding similar developments across the country," he said.
The retail station is expected to contribute to local economic activity, with seven permanent employees already engaged. The Express Shop also features a loyalty programme, allowing customers to redeem points for fuel or other products.
