Government wants informal sector to contribute in taxes

Published: 10 June 2013
Government says there is a need to come up with a database of the informal industry so that it can contribute to national development through paying tax.

While there are no official statistics on the number of people operating in the informal sector, it is estimated that they constitute about 80%.

The Minister of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere said many youths who could not be absorbed into the formal sector are operating in the informal sector, adding that government can only realise the full benefits of the group if there is a database.

The informal sector became the major source of employment for many Zimbabweans during the past decade.

This sector continues to grow and its contribution to national development is still minimal as the sector is not paying tax.
