Jonathan Moyo calls for Mnangagwa-Chamisa GNU

EXILED former Cabinet minister and one of the alleged kingpins of the Generation 40 (G40) faction, Jonathan Moyo, - has said President Emmerson Mnangagwa should form a government of national unity (GNU) with opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa - to extricate the country from the worsening economic crisis.

Moyo, a rabid critic of Mnangagwa whose Lacoste faction prevailed over the G40 in 2017 when the military rolled the tanks to end former president Robert Mugabe's long ruinous rule, has also said Chamisa should not settle for less in any political arrangement with the Zanu-PF leader.

The former Tsholotsho North MP comments come as there are growing calls for the 76-year-old Mnangagwa and Chamisa to hold talks and end their quarrelling which was sparked off by the disputed outcome of the July 30 elections.

"A…GNU can solve the disputed 2018 presidential poll," Moyo wrote on micro blogging site, Twitter, suggesting four alternatives to ending the Mnangagwa-Chamsia brawling.

Moyo said one of options was to have Chamisa take over as legitimate winner or that the MDC leader and Mnangagwa become co-presidents.

He suggested that the other option was to have the two men rotate the presidency or that a National Transitional Authority (NTA) be formed.

He however, said in terms of the arrangement, Chamisa should not accept to be Mnangagwa's deputy or a prime minister.

Mnangagwa and Chamisa have been rowing ever since the outcome of the historic July 30 elections whose result was challenged by the youthful opposition leader who claimed that it was manipulated in the Zanu-PF leader's favour.

The result was however upheld by the Constitutional Court.

In 2009, Mugabe was forced into forming a GNU with the late MDC leader and founding president Morgan Tsvangirai after the hotly-disputed 2008 polls.

In those polls, Tsvangirai beat Mugabe hands down.

However, the results of the elections were withheld for six long weeks by stunned authorities - amid widespread allegations of ballot tampering and fraud, which were later revealed by former bigwigs of the ruling Zanu-PF.

In the ensuing sham presidential run-off, which authorities claimed was needed to determine the winner, Zanu-PF apparatchiks engaged in an orgy of violence in which hundreds of Tsvangirai's supporters were killed, forcing the former prime minister in the inclusive government to withdraw from the discredited race altogether.

Mugabe went on to stand in an embarrassing and widely-condemned one-man race in which he declared himself the winner.
