Commodities exchange remains a dream

Published: 03 July 2013
Government has failed to meet its June deadline for the operationalisation of the commodities exchange, amid calls for sincerity in the setting up of the exchange.

Despite pledges by the Ministry of Finance that the commodities exchange will be operational by June, it is yet to become a reality.

The commodities exchange is expected to ensure increased efficiency in the marketing of agricultural products, assist in the mobilisation of financial resources and ensure price transparency.

An economic analyst, Mr Innocent Makwiramiti said given the importance of the commodities exchange in ensuring fair pricing of agricultural commodities, the government should show its sincerity in the setting up of the long awaited exchange.

Presenting the State of the Economy Report for the month of April, Finance Minister Tendai Biti said the government has disbursed US$500 000 towards the setting up of the exchange.
