Kasukuwere says foreign banks free to leave

Published: 10 June 2013
Indigenisation and Empowerment minister Saviour Kasukuwere yesterday said foreign-owned banks were free to leave if they are not prepared to support the agricultural sector and emerging businesses in Zimbabwe.

Addressing African editors who are in the country at the invitation of the Zimbabwe National Editors Forum, Kasukuwere singled out Standard Chartered Bank, Barclays Bank and Stanbic Bank saying the 3 international banks were not supportive of the country's economy.

On indigenous banks, he said they deserved to be protected because they were the ones which supported Zimbabwean industries when the economy took a deep plunge a few years ago.
