The Commercial Farmers' Union has revealed that at least $3 billion was required to rejuvenate the agricultural sector and mitigate the effects of hunger.
CFU president Charles Taffs said last week that the food shortages currently being experienced in most parts of the country were caused by enactment of poor agricultural policies that resulted in about 70 000 hectares of irrigated land being decommissioned.
The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that at least 2.2 million people would require food aid by early next year.
Taffs said it was not possible to have the agriculture sector driven by central government.
