Govt begins consultations on SEZs
Published: 26 May 2014

Government is currently holding consultations with various stakeholders with the view to coming up with a Special Economic Zones (SEZ) model that is best suited to the Zimbabwean situation.

Industry and Commerce minister Mike Bimha said consultations had already begun on the incentives that would be offered to investors and identifying areas of the economy in need of funding.

"Government is looking at coming up with a model that suits us and the incentives that we should offer the potential investors to go with that model," he said. He said a presentation on the outcome of the consultations would be tabled before Cabinet as soon as possible. Minister Bhima said they would consider growth points as one area in need of funding.

"Not all countries have growth points but in Zimbabwe it is a common feature and we need to address it. Once you have addressed growth points, you are looking at not only industries but SMEs and other stakeholders," he said.

He said the Government would come up with a package of incentives that addresses the needs of particular geographical locations and sectors.

The re-establishment of Special Economic Zones is meant to create a vibrant, self-sustaining and robust manufacturing industry with capacity to produce goods and services for both, the domestic and export markets.
