Gweru Town Clerk, Mrs Elizabeth Gwatipedza has confirmed that the local authority sold the Gweru's iconic Kudzanayi long-distance bus terminus to investors who are set to transform the area into a state of the art shopping mall.

Although it is not yet clear when the investor will move in to start work at the bus terminus, Ms Gwatipedza revealed that the council sold the 1,8 hectare piece of land for $120 million 2004 but the investor could not start work at the site owing to economic challenges.

The investor has since assured the local authority that as soon as they get a partner, work will commence at the site that will see the bus terminus being transformed into a modern shopping mall.

A new terminus for Gweru long distance buses was initially sited in Mtapa and preliminary works were done only to be abandoned mid-way due to financial constrains.

Ms Gwatipedza said the local authority will soon engage stakeholders to assist in identifying a convenient bus interchange area that will include a state of the art shopping mall.

Currently, the council is engaging students from tertiary institutions to come up with designs for the proposed modern bus terminus for Gweru.

The relocation of the bus terminus to Mtapa is part of the council's effort to de-congest the central business district.
