Hands off ZEC, says Youth League

Zanu-PF national secretary for Youth Affairs Pupurai Togarepi says the party has done everything to ensure a resounding victory in the July 30 elections. He said the MDC Alliance should seek votes from the people than trying to discredit the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

Togarepi was addressing a northern region zanu-pf Youth Convention at Murombedzi Growth Point on Friday last week. Machinations by the alliance, he said, are driven by fear of imminent defeat at the polls.

"They know that they will be defeated that is why they are targeting the referee — ZEC — before the match even begins. Allow ZEC to do its job," he said.

"Everyone should go and seek votes from the electorate like what we are doing here as Zanu-PF" He said the party did not want anybody to interfere with ZEC. The MDC Alliance, Togarepi said, was under the illusion that it is more superior than all other parties participating in the elections.

"They can demonstrate all they want, we respect their right to do so. They can bring together people from different areas to boost numbers, but as zanu-pf we do not stop people from scoring, but we score more goals."

He said the opposition should allow ZEC to do its job. Togarepi urged party youths to act as commissars for the party's presidential candidate Mnangagwa to defend the revolution.

Meanwhile, Mashonaland West provincial youth chairman, Vengai Musengi said the party should come up with mechanisms to empower artisanal miners and also deal with party leaders that are fanning divisions.

"We see a lot of things happening in Mashonaland West province aimed disturbing the activities of youths, but we will remain resolute so that the party wins resoundingly," he said. Provincial party chairman Ziyambi Ziyambi said youths are crucial in the coming elections as they constitute the bulk of registered voter.

"There are some who from the time the election date was announced have been fanning violence and attempting to discredit the election.

"We are saying the youth vote should be about peace and development which President Mnangagwa is advocating for," he said.

Harare provincial youth chairman, Godfrey Gomwe said Harare will give unprecedented figures for the President and the party. The convention drew youths from Harare, Mashonaland Central and West provinces.
