Police, ZIMRA in luxury vehicle crackdown

Police, in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), have launched a nationwide blitz targeting luxury vehicles smuggled into the country without paying duty and taxes.

The operation comes in response to a sharp rise in unregistered vehicles on Zimbabwe's roads, some of which have been linked to criminal activities. High-end models, including the Toyota Hilux GD6, are among those under scrutiny.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the crackdown, saying it was part of a broader campaign to restore order on the country's roads.

"No one is above the law. We have an ongoing operation targeting vehicles without number plates, those without proper clearance, and others being used for criminal activities. This blitz is part of that wider effort," he said.

The police have pledged that the joint exercise with ZIMRA will remain in force until all offenders are brought to book, warning that vehicles without proper documentation risk seizure.

The blitz follows increasing concerns that illegally imported vehicles are depriving government of much-needed revenue while also providing a cover for unlawful activities.
