Zimbabweans will converge in Zvishavane tomorrow for the Munhumutapa Day commemorations, with a special focus on youth empowerment and addressing emerging challenges such as drug and substance abuse.
The event will also celebrate President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who turns 83 tomorrow, recognising him as a statesman, visionary, and champion for national development and global peace, said Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere.
"We celebrate a patriot, a pioneer freedom fighter, a democrat and Pan-Africanist who is committed to achieving an upper-middle-income society by 2030 and securing a prosperous future for Zimbabwe," Minister Muswere said.
More than 30,000 participants, especially youths from across the country, are expected to attend the event, which was initiated by the Zanu-PF Youth League. Named after the pre-colonial Mutapa Empire, the day seeks to link the historical progress of Madzimbahwe with contemporary development under President Mnangagwa.
The celebrations will highlight key achievements of the Second Republic, including the transformation of national infrastructure, boosted food security, and initiatives that improve livelihoods. Notable projects include the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway, the Lake Gwayi-Shangani construction, and the completion of the Trablablas Interchange.
Youths will also mark progress in government initiatives such as the Revolving Youth Empowerment Fund, business units, farm mechanisation schemes, and the heifer pass-on programme, which have positively impacted communities nationwide.
The event will coincide with the commissioning of the US$29 million Midlands Park flats, a modern development providing accommodation for 1,000 families, said Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube.
"This day was established to instil patriotism and national pride while honouring the historical significance of the Munhumutapa Empire," said Zanu-PF Midlands province chairperson Cde Edison Chiherenge.
Zanu-PF Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs Cde John Paradza emphasised that the celebrations also highlight youth development as part of Zimbabwe's Vision 2030, giving young people the opportunity to interact directly with the President.
Ahead of the main event, the Munhumutapa Half-Marathon will be held today, starting at Vugwi Business Centre in Zvishavane.
