A joint medical team from Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and the private Trauma Centre in Harare has successfully performed open-heart surgery for mitral valve replacement, marking a historic breakthrough in Zimbabwe's healthcare sector.

The procedure, carried out by local surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses, was hailed as a defining moment by Trauma Centre director Dr Vivek Solanki.

"Today, we mark a significant milestone in Zimbabwe's healthcare history," he said. "We have successfully performed open-heart surgery, cardiac stenting, preventive medicine and neurosurgery right here in our country. This achievement is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our medical team, including specialists from both Trauma Centre and Parirenyatwa Hospital."

The operation was made possible through the establishment of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (CathLab), which has already enabled life-saving cardiac stenting and other advanced interventions.

Dr Solanki credited the success to a public-private partnership between Trauma Centre and Parirenyatwa, describing it as a model of collaboration. "Their expert cardiac nurses have been invaluable, and this partnership is a shining example of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors come together to improve healthcare," he said.

He added that the breakthrough not only improves local healthcare but also positions Zimbabwe as a potential hub for medical tourism. "Patients can now access world-class treatment without having to cross borders. This is a moment of immense pride for our nation, and we should celebrate the tireless efforts of our healthcare professionals," he said.

Dr Solanki also called for sustained investment in health infrastructure and training, saying Zimbabwe has the capacity to match regional and global standards.

The success of the surgery, alongside ongoing advances in cardiac stenting, preventive medicine and neurosurgery, underscores Zimbabwe's growing medical capabilities. With skilled personnel, cutting-edge technology and strengthened partnerships, the country is steadily positioning itself as a regional leader in advanced treatment.
