ActionSA rejects further extension of Zimbabwean Exemption Permits

ActionSA has sharply criticised Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber's decision to extend the validity of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEPs) until 28 May 2027, describing it as another display of government indecision and failure to address South Africa's immigration challenges.

In a statement, the opposition party said the government's repeated extensions of the permits demonstrate a lack of leadership and commitment to enforcing immigration laws.

"This decision represents yet another act of indecision and weakness by a government that continues to avoid confronting South Africa's immigration crisis head-on," the party said. "Our nation does not need endless extensions. We need decisive leadership, firm timelines, and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law."

ActionSA said that while it supports a humane and orderly approach to immigration, it opposes the government's ongoing reliance on temporary measures, arguing that such actions erode public confidence and compromise the integrity of South Africa's borders.

The party also dismissed Schreiber's justification of "ongoing consultations" with the Immigration Advisory Board, saying it offered no comfort to citizens who have waited years for a permanent solution.

"There is still no clear, time-bound plan to resolve this long-standing issue, leaving our borders porous and our immigration system in disarray," ActionSA stated.

The party called on the minister to publish a comprehensive transition plan outlining firm deadlines for concluding consultations and implementing immigration reforms. It also urged the strengthening of the Border Management Authority and internal enforcement mechanisms to curb illegal immigration.

"Every further delay deepens social tensions, weakens accountability, and tells law-abiding South Africans that their government lacks the political courage to lead," the statement continued.

ActionSA reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a "lawful, compassionate, and accountable" immigration framework that balances humanitarian responsibilities with the protection of South African citizens' security, employment, and dignity.
