Magaya granted bail

The wife of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries founder, Walter Magaya, has been granted bail after a Harare magistrate ruled that there were no compelling reasons to justify her continued detention.

Presiding over the matter, the magistrate acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations against Tendai Magaya but said the gravity of the offence alone was not sufficient grounds to deny her bail.

"In this case, the court finds the explanations provided by the accused to be plausible," said the magistrate. "There are no compelling reasons submitted by the State to deny her bail. The accused is not a flight risk."

The court also observed that Tendai had been under investigation since 2023 and had multiple opportunities to leave the country for destinations such as the United Kingdom or South Africa, yet she chose to remain in Zimbabwe and cooperate with authorities.

"Denying her bail under these circumstances would amount to a travesty of justice," the magistrate ruled. "It defies common sense to assume she would flee now when she has had ample opportunity to do so previously."

The court further found that the State's case appeared weak at this stage and that its concerns could be adequately addressed through strict bail conditions.

Tendai Magaya was ordered to pay US$500 bail, surrender her passport, report once every two weeks at ZRP Waterfalls Police Station, continue residing at her current address, and refrain from interfering with witnesses.

Both Tendai and her husband, Walter Magaya, are expected to return to court on November 18.

The State is being represented by Mr Clemence Chimbare, while the Magayas are represented by Mr Admire Rubaya and Mr Everson Chatambudza.
