Authorities in Botswana have expressed concern over rising tensions between local residents and Zimbabwean nationals in Mogoditshane following a series of violent clashes that left several people injured and raised fears of further unrest.
The disturbances reportedly began on Saturday at Manyanda Bar in the Sentomole ward of Mogoditshane amid growing accusations by some residents that foreign nationals, particularly Zimbabweans, are contributing to criminal activity in the area.
Mogoditshane Acting Police Station Commander Mompoloki Ramaphoi confirmed the incidents and warned that the situation could worsen if calm is not restored.
"It is alleged that a group of Zimbabwean nationals locked Batswana inside the bar and assaulted them. Stones were allegedly thrown during the altercation, resulting in damage to the bar's windows," Ramaphoi said.
Police subsequently opened a malicious damage to property case following a complaint by the owner of the establishment.
No arrests had been made at the time of reporting, with investigations continuing.
According to police, tensions escalated on Sunday when groups of local residents allegedly moved through parts of the area targeting foreign nationals at their homes and assaulting them.
One Zimbabwean man was reportedly left unconscious and was rushed to Princess Marina Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.
A further confrontation allegedly occurred on Sunday night at Manyanda Bar, prompting police intervention.
"Police responded promptly and rescued the two men, who had sustained serious injuries," Ramaphoi said, referring to two Zimbabwean nationals who were allegedly attacked during the incident.
Authorities have appealed for restraint from all parties and urged residents not to resort to vigilante action.
"We are appealing to both Batswana and Zimbabwean nationals to exercise restraint and maintain peace before the situation deteriorates further," Ramaphoi said.
He stressed that criminal allegations should be handled through the justice system rather than through retaliation or mob violence.
The incidents come amid broader regional concerns over tensions involving migrant communities and underline the need for dialogue and lawful resolution of disputes.
Police said investigations remain ongoing and that law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring developments in Mogoditshane amid concerns that further clashes could occur if tensions are not eased.
