A front-end loader operator employed by Tai Hao International Resources (Pvt) Ltd tragically lost his life on Friday while working at the Zimasco (Pvt) Ltd ferrochrome processing site in Kwekwe, Midlands Province.

The deceased, identified as Cosmas Musoni, was operating heavy machinery when he was fatally buried under a ferrochrome slag avalanche. The incident occurred while Musoni was working on a slag stockpile, which suddenly collapsed, engulfing both him and the front-end loader he was operating. He died at the scene.

In a statement issued through its legal representatives, Chitsa and Masvaya Law Chambers, Tai Hao International Resources confirmed the fatal accident and expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

"Mr Musoni and the front-end loader he was operating were engulfed by a ferrochrome slag avalanche from a stockpile he was loading from at Zimasco (Pvt) Ltd premises in Kwekwe, where the company is currently contracted," the statement read.

The company added that it was cooperating fully with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted and to help prevent similar accidents in the future.

"Tai Hao International Resources (Pvt) Ltd is cooperating with the relevant authorities to ensure that all requirements in terms of the law are fulfilled to avoid recurrence," the company said.

The company described the late Musoni as a "hardworking, well-groomed and well-cherished employee," noting that his death was a significant loss to the team.

Authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, while calls for improved safety measures in Zimbabwe's mining and heavy industry sector have once again come to the fore.
