The government has scrapped a contentious policy that required fuel tankers transiting through Zimbabwe to pay duty upon entry and reclaim it on exit, a measure transporters said was crippling the industry.

The regulation, introduced last year to curb fuel smuggling and promote the Feruka pipeline, faced backlash from truckers who argued that charges, which could reach US$23,000 per truck, were excessive.

On Tuesday, Cabinet announced the repeal of the Statutory Instrument governing the duty, stating it would cut costs for operators and enhance Zimbabwe's attractiveness as a transit route for fuel.

Cabinet also reviewed other transport-related charges, including vehicle registration and change of ownership fees under the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR), ZINARA and ZIMRA levies, and parking and traffic management fees imposed by local authorities.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere said the reforms are part of broader efforts to streamline procedures, reduce the cost of doing business, and boost national competitiveness.
