Air Zimbabwe tenders for smaller aircraft

Government says it will next week invite bids for the supply of 50-65 seater airbuses to Air Zimbabwe, to service its local and regional routes.

At a media briefing in Harare Thursday, the minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Obert Mpofu said the tender will be for some specified aircrafts.

"Firstly we will float a tender for our domestic and regional requirements, which the Tender Board will be dealing with this week. I think the gazetting of that tender will be done this week.

"Because of the queries that we have been receiving on this developments, we felt we should update you, so that there is no disconnection on the information regarding these issues." he said.

Air Zim services Harare, Bulawayo, Victoria Falls, Johannesburg, Lusaka, Lubumbashi, London, Kuala Lumpur and Beijing.

The airline's proud history hinges on its e-safety record, the skills of its pilots, and on its strong in-flight customer service.

It also operates commercial charter services to cater for groups of between 100 to 200 people to domestic, regional or international destinations.

The national airline's operational fleet complement comprises of two B767s, three B737s and three MA60, which joined the fleet in May 2005.

B767-200ER operates international flights with a capacity of 30 business class and 167 economy class passengers and a cargo carrying capacity of five tonnes.

The B737 -200 advanced series also operates regional and domestic destinations with a limited capacity of 12 business class and 93 economy class with a cargo carrying capacity of 1,2 tonnes.

The Chinese MA60 also operates regional and domestic flights with the capacity of 52 economy class passengers.

Recently, a 50-seater Embraer ERJ 145LR plane leased to Air Zimbabwe by Solenta Aviation was withdrawn.
