Workers at Anjin Investments, a diamond mining company operating in Zimbabwe, have staged a protest, halting operations as they demand immediate action over a range of grievances, including four months' worth of unpaid salaries and alleged procedural irregularities in the company's operations.
The disgruntled workers, backed by the Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU), are also calling for a full investigation into the company's diamond sorting process, which they claim is plagued by irregularities that could lead to the misappropriation of resources.
"The workers are demanding transparency and fairness, especially in diamond sorting, which currently has glaring loopholes. This is deeply concerning, especially as these same operations are failing to generate enough to pay workers on time," ZDAMWU general secretary Mr Justice Chinhema said in a statement.
Among the most serious accusations is the alleged neglect of a sick employee, Clever Chiobvu, who reportedly died after being denied the financial assistance needed for medical care.
"This neglect has resulted in tragic consequences," Chinhema said. "Clever Chiobvu was in dire need of hospital care, but the company failed to provide the necessary support. His death was avoidable and highlights management's reckless disregard for worker welfare."
Workers are also demanding better working conditions, adherence to labour laws, and a respectful and safe working environment going forward.
In light of these issues, the union has called on relevant authorities and industry regulators to urgently intervene, ensure accountability, and protect the rights of mine workers.
Efforts to obtain a response from Anjin's Communications Officer, Mr Speciaone Matarirano, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.
Anjin Investments is one of the firms operating in the Marange diamond fields in eastern Zimbabwe — a sector long plagued by transparency and accountability issues. The latest unrest once again casts a shadow over the operations of the country's diamond mining industry.
