Government has commissioned a US$5.7 million hydro power project in Chipinge as more incentives are being extended to private players to invest in power generation.

Guest of honour at the launch of Kupinga hydro power project, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Patrick Chinamasa hailed the partnership between Kupinga Renewable Energy Private Limited with Old Mutual as a key component of the nerve centre of economic development.

Minister Chinamasa said government  will continue to enhance incentives that include tax holiday and granting of national project status on key infrastructural development projects order to promote more investments in the energy sector.

The Minister of Energy and Power Development, Dr Samuel Undenge said there are more investment prospects in the energy sector especially considering power shortages of between 300 megawatts to 600 megawatts per day.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Manicaland Province, Mandi Chimene who was represented by director in his office Mr Kennedy Mugarisana lauded the investment in hydro power as a giant step towards infrastructure development.

Kupinga hydro power project produces 1.6 megawatts and started operations this January in line with government drive to promote power generation.

Government has already singled out Tokwe-Mukosi, Gairezi, Risitu 2, Risitu and Tsanga as other priority Muni-hydro power projects that can add more than 53 megawatts to the national grid.
