Zimbabwe fuel prices remain among Africa's highest

Zimbabwe's fuel prices remain among the highest in Africa despite a minor adjustment announced this month.

Data from the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) shows petrol prices dropped slightly from US$1.56 in August to US$1.55 in September, while diesel stayed unchanged at US$1.55 per litre.

The marginal change comes as global oil prices continue to ease due to increased production and rising inventories, with the U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasting Brent crude to fall to around US$58 per barrel by late 2025.

Despite these global declines, Zimbabwean motorists are still paying well above the global average of US$1.29 per litre, making local fuel costs some of the highest in Africa. Analysts attribute the high prices to a combination of taxes, levies, and a mandatory 20% ethanol blend, which alone adds more than US$1.10 per litre to petrol costs.

While the government has avoided subsidies that weigh heavily on budgets in countries like Nigeria and Angola, consumers in Zimbabwe are left facing persistently steep prices at the pump.
