A dramatic armed robbery attempt at Glendale Post Office on Friday ended in chaos as a gang of robbers exchanged gunfire with police detectives, ultimately leading to the arrest of one suspect.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that Tinashe Cloud Jokonya (40) was apprehended in connection with the foiled incident, which occurred at the ZIMPOST offices on 12 September 2025 around 12:50 a.m.

Commissioner Paul Nyathi, ZRP national spokesperson, said Jokonya and four accomplices stormed the premises shortly before 1 a.m., overpowering the security guard. They seized a Cobra machine gun, the guard's cellphone, and pepper spray, binding his hands and legs with shoelaces.

The robbers forced their way through screen doors, but their plan was thwarted when an alert guard from a nearby facility raised the alarm. A rapid response team arrived on the scene, prompting the suspects to open fire. Police returned fire, forcing the gang to scatter into the darkness. Jokonya was captured, while the other four remain at large.

Investigators recovered a cache of tools believed to have been intended for the robbery, including grinders, batteries, cutting discs, wire cutters, gloves, caps, and a magazine loaded with dummy rounds.

Police investigations are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects. Commissioner Nyathi urged the public to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the fugitives.
