The Government of Zimbabwe is crafting a new policy framework to regulate the media sector and guide content creation in response to the rapid growth of digital platforms and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Zhemu Soda said the proposed regulations are aimed at promoting responsible journalism, curbing misinformation and strengthening professionalism across the industry.
Speaking after a Cabinet meeting, Dr Soda revealed that consultations with media stakeholders are already underway as authorities work towards a comprehensive regulatory approach.
"Through the Ministry of Information, we are working on a project by which human capital development will be prioritised, especially to ensure that we have content that is being created, especially local content, in line with our media policy requirements," he said.
"We have set aside some resources for content creation."
The initiative comes at a time when technological advancements have made it easier for individuals to create and distribute content instantly, raising concerns over misinformation, content standards and ethical practices.
Government says the new framework will also emphasise skills development within the media sector, ensuring that content creators are equipped to operate in an increasingly digital environment.
The policy is expected to place greater focus on local content production while aligning media outputs with national policy objectives.
Authorities say the move is part of broader efforts to modernise Zimbabwe's media landscape while maintaining accountability and credibility in the dissemination of information.
