Chivayo's ZITF appearance sparks outrage

The appearance of controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo alongside President Emmerson Mnangagwa and visiting Botswana President Duma Boko during a tour of exhibition stands at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) has triggered widespread public debate and scrutiny online.

Chivayo, who has long been associated with government-linked contracts and politically connected business dealings, was seen moving within what appeared to be an official presidential entourage, prompting questions about protocol and his formal role-if any-in state functions.

Prominent figures and commentators criticised the development. Lawyer and former legislator Fadzayi Mahere publicly questioned why Chivayo was included in the delegation and why senior government officials such as vice presidents appeared absent from the visible entourage.

Journalist Chofamba Sithole also weighed in, arguing that in a functioning democracy, such a situation would typically prompt parliamentary scrutiny over security clearance and the informalisation of state protocol.

On social media, reactions ranged from criticism over perceived breaches of official procedure to ridicule of Chivayo's presence within the presidential tour, with some users questioning his influence and standing in government-adjacent spaces.

Others raised concerns about his controversial public profile, including past legal issues, arguing that his proximity to the highest office of the State raises broader questions about transparency, governance norms, and the separation between private business interests and official state functions.

The Presidency has not issued an official explanation regarding Chivayo's inclusion in the ZITF tour delegation.
