Kalaa Mpinga resigns as Mwana CE

Mwana Africa Plc (Mwana) founder and chief executive Kalaa Mpinga has resigned with immediate effect after the recent boardroom changes at the Zimbabwe-based nickel and gold miner.

Yat Hoi Ning, the new Mwana executive chairman, said terms of Mpinga's departure are still to be finalised and agreed by both parties.

"Mr Mpinga has been a great asset in the creation of Mwana and throughout its development to date. We wish him all the best in the future," he said.

"With these recent changes to the Board having now taken place it marks a clear new beginning for Mwana and its shareholders, and we are confident that we have all the necessary qualities and experience to deliver success in the future," added Ning.

Mpinga's departure from the London-listed resources firm comes hardly a day after Zimbabweans Ngoni Kudenga and Herbert Mashanyare were removed from the board – in an apparent hostile company takeover.

Speaking after the company's extraordinary general meeting in London on Tuesday, Ning told investors that the new board - composed of Scott Morrison, Mark Wellesley-Wood, Olivier Barbeau and Anne-Marie Chidzero - would drive the company forward.

"Shareholders have spoken and the company fully respects their views. We will now ensure that the company is in a position to capitalise on its strong operational performance achieved in the first half of the financial year," he said.

Mwana has interests across the continent and produces gold and nickel from two mines in Zimbabwe. It holds an 85 percent interest in the Freda Rebecca gold mine and a 75,4 percent stake in Bindura Nickel Corporation.

It also has interests in other projects in Angola, Botswana, DRC, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
