Prosecutor General Justice Loyce Matanda-Moyo has highlighted the immense challenges and personal risks involved in combating corruption in Zimbabwe, describing the work as a constant battle against entrenched and well-connected elites.
Speaking to the Transparency International Zimbabwe (TIZ) Integrity School Class of 2025 in Harare, Justice Matanda-Moyo drew on her experience in high-profile roles, including as former Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) and now as head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). She described her career as "a masterclass in pressure," emphasizing the weight of decisions that affect the nation.
"My experience has been a masterclass in pressure. As the former Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption Commission and now the Prosecutor General, the decisions you make carry the weight of the nation. You will be offered shortcuts, threats, and enormous temptation. You must learn to stand firm," she said.
Justice Matanda-Moyo stressed that integrity is the critical defence against compromise, cautioning that those who succumb to bribes or favouritism undermine leadership and become liabilities to the nation. "When you are fighting corruption, you are fighting powerful, entrenched interests. Your integrity is the only firewall between you and compromise. If you can be bought, you are not a leader; you are a liability," she added.
Addressing the young leaders in attendance, the Prosecutor General issued a direct challenge, urging them to act with honesty and accountability. "You are the ones who witness the crimes. You see the people who suddenly get rich. If you report, we can investigate them and initiate unexplained wealth proceedings. Do not take part in corruption, benefit from it behind our backs, and then play lip service to the fight," she said.
Justice Matanda-Moyo concluded by urging participants to embrace integrity in every aspect of their lives. "Leave this summit with a resolve to be different. Be honest, entrepreneur. Be the transparent civil servant. Be the brave whistleblower. Let your integrity be the signature on everything you do. Protect your currency - it is the only one that truly never devalues."
Her remarks come at a time when Zimbabwe continues to grapple with high-profile corruption cases, underscoring the ongoing struggle of law enforcement and judicial authorities to hold powerful individuals accountable.
