The Mines and Mining Development Minister, Walter Chidhakwa has challenged the diamond mining joint venture firms operating in Marange to invest in community development.

Minister Chidhakwa, who is on a three day familiarisation tour of the diamond mining firms, commended the joint venture firms for putting in place sound mining infrastructure and security systems.

He, however, challenged the companies to do more for the country's citizens, especially in road construction.

Responding to pleas by the joint venture firms for more mining claims, Cde Chidhakwa said government will be looking into the geological reports from the mining houses to ascertain whether there is need for more concessions.

Chidhakwa said given the significant role that the mining sector is envisaged to play in the transformation of the economy; his ministry has come up with measures aimed at ensuring that there are increased contributions to the economy by the sector.

Government is looking up to the mining sector, in particular the diamond sub-sector, to play a significant role in the successful implementation of the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (ZIM ASSET).
