Nurses bow to govt pressure

Nurses bow to govt pressure

Striking nurses will return to work tomorrow after union leaders claimed the week-long job boycott has been politicised.

Nurses went on strike last Monday demanding outstanding allowances and an immediate review of their salaries.

On Tuesday vice-president Constantino Chiwenga announced that the striking health workers had been summarily dismissed and government was now recruiting unemployed and retired health workers.

"It is highly regrettable that our cause of collective job action has been highly politicised," the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZNA) said in a statement yesterday evening.

"This has potrayed us in bad light. To pave way for re-opening of negotiations and protection of our workers we have decided to call off the industrial action."

However, the association will still pursue a High Court case seeking to bar the government from firing the nurses that went on strike and stop the new recruitments.
